It was the first day of classes at FSU, and I was so excited to finally begin my college education. Nobody had registered for classes -- apparently, you just showed up to whatever class interested you. Just like high school, there were six classes a day, five days a week.
My first class was French. It was taught by a man, but he never told us his name. The classroom we were seated in was almost identical to my 9th grade algebra classroom. I noticed a lot of "stupid people" from my high school in the class, and various people I'd taken French with in high school, all of whom could barely say "oui" or "non." I realized I'd been placed (although we were allowed to pick?) in the beginning French course. I was mortified. The teacher went over some very, very basic stuff, but it all went along with a particular theme...the theme was very strange, and it was also the class title, but I can't remember it now.
Finally, French class ended, and I began to make my way to my next class. It was at this point that I realized today was a class "tryout" day. You could go to whatever classes you wanted, and if you liked them, you could continue taking them. If you didn't like them, you didn't have to go back. It was pretty confusing.
I wound up in an English class next. The desks were very tiny and I could barely fit in mine. There were only about fifteen students in the class, including Apollo (my 11th grade obsession), Allison (a girl I'd known in elementary school), and a few other people I had been acquainted with in high school.
The teacher was an extremely cool Jamaican woman in a wheelchair. Before she even began teaching, I could sense that she was a really interesting individual, someone I'd love to have as a teacher.
I was suddenly sitting across from Allison, and we started whispering and giggling about something.
The next thing I knew, I was sitting in a dark corner in the back of the classroom. Some girl had become violently ill and was in a bathroom on one side of the classroom. Pretty soon, Apollo (*swoon*) emerged from the bathroom. He had been sitting next to the girl when she fell ill, and had taken her to the bathroom.
He noticed me for the first time and was very happy to see me. We exchanged hellos, and he returned to his seat.
