room mates in the City
Author:
uberbudgie
I was in this city with an ex room mate
of mine, one that I especially disliked
(he was a liar and used to constantly hit
on me when we were alone together,
despite the fact that his girlfriend lived
with us (and would secretly do the same
when he wasn't around) -- icky situation!)
So, we were in this little red East-Eurpoean
looking car together, going through an
area that looked a lot like SF's mission
district, except that a lot of the buildings
were made of a thick glass. He was
talking about himself a lot and asking
why I would't date him, he looked the
same as he did then even though I don't
look at all like I did when we were room
mates.
I was paying more attention to the city
and my driving than to him, and
was very pleased that there was so
much parking available.
We parked next to this smaller building that
looked like a stylized elevator shaft, and I
realized that this was our apartment.
A woman (the landlord) came out to greet
us wearing a 30's style apron. She was
wringing her hands and looked about 42;
mousy, and good-natured -- very thin. Kinda
remided me of an Olive Oyl with glasses, only
with light brown hair. She was apologising for
the mess and letting us know that even though
there was stuff all over the place, it was all
clean and just hadn't made it to the beds
yet. (There were green and peach colored
sheets everywhere). That, and venting
about property laws and some legal dispute
she'd been embroiled in as of late. (I
liked her a great deal, found her most
refreshing).
The ex roomie and I went over to the
building and crawled through the door
and the sheets with our landlord behind
us; there were two very cute girls roughly
my age (early 20's) on the bed, just being
girls and looking very post-punk and vital.
Both had fair skin and hair (undyed
but cropped very short), and were wearing
sweet looking tank tops -- they looked
like they were of Celtic descent.
The two girls recognised me and
gave me a big hug (these were my
other room mates). And we all
ignored the guy, who was talking
with our landlord anyhow about how
he disliked something that sounded
terribly inane and waxed on being
an excuse for him to ramble about
his self-importance.
Then we snuck out through a window
and ran to a club for some Middle-Eastern
music and a few cocktails, taking a couple
of sheets with us, laughing our heads off
into a light misty rain.
It was Middle-Eastern technopop. The two
girls had the sheets coquettishly wrapped
around them like shawls, and were flirting
with just about everyone in the room, just
about everyone in the room being every
bit as young, vital, and perky as they.
I felt very conspicuous, as I felt like I was
the oldest person in the room, and didn't
have the same 'young cuteness' as everyone
else around me. I certainly wasn't dressed
as young, wearing frumpy office-casual
stuff.
Then this really cute boy who looked like
a very young Jhonen Vasquez came up to me,
touched my hand and whispered into my
ear with his lips touching my ear:
"Relax; you are not as old as you think
you are."
And I woke up.
