My friend and are are in a dark underground train station that may or may not be abandoned; all of the trains have gone for the evening. Everything
smells like damp earth, metal, and oil.
Two or three lights are flooding the tunnel with
a sickly orange glow, and sputtering. The rest
are broken and the bulbs hang shattered from
the ceiling.
We have to hide; we have to find something
but I don't know what it is. I don't think that
she knows what it is either... So, we keep
crawling into large pipes and broken down doorways that keep leading deeper and
deeper underground. We have to go where
it is safe, and something unknown is hunting
us. If we get to the last room, we will be safe.
(????).
We keep crawling under semi-hidden doors
and windows, and the concrete becomes
older and older. Mud is streaked across our
faces and on the hems of our skirts.
We get to the final room; it looks cross
between an abandoned cannery and an
old church. There are puddles of horse
urine all over the dirt floor, which had once
been concrete, but was worn into the earth.
Filth and newspapers covered the ground,
and straw... Pidgeons flew through the
rafters and dusty air, and half of the
windows were either plates of galvanized
metal or ancient dust-caked broken glass
where sunlight streamed through the cracks
in fragmented shafts of light.
We held each other, shaking; whatever it
was was not there. Whatever hunted for
us was getting close, and all of the doors
were barred.
